Goals and Objectives

To identify a pilot neighborhood in which to begin work (Canonsburg or Washington)

  • To gather information on three health areas in the pilot neighborhood
  • To identify key people in the pilot neighborhood

To mobilize the pilot neighborhood around the three identified healthy lifestyle areas (activity, nutrition, and self esteem/body image)

  • To invite key people in the pilot neighborhood to presentation
  • To hold the presentation meeting and enlist committed individuals to begin planning what will work in their neighborhood

To act a support resource for the pilot neighborhood and all of Washington County

  • To document pilot neighborhood results and market to other neighborhoods to expand reach
  • To create a brochure that explains Body Mass Index in layman’s terms
  • To create and implement Eating Disorder screening trainings for schools and physicians

Problem Statement

The Nutrition Task Force will focus on promoting and supporting healthy lifestyles for all children and the adults that impact their home, school, and neighborhood. Healthy lifestyles are defined as living actively, eating in healthy ways, and encouraging positive body image and self esteem.

Washington County Health Partners, Inc.’s 2002 Health Assessment found that 34.4% of Washington County adults were physically inactive and 65.8% were overweight. In addition, the issues of eating disorders came up as one of the top three topics in the 14 high school focus groups that were conducted with Washington County students.

The task force plans to: target a pilot neighborhood to mobilize around the three healthy lifestyle issues; act as a support resource; document the results; and market the concept to other neighborhoods to expand the impact.
